Legal and Other Support Services
Barriers to employment may be as complex as negotiating child support arrears and a bad credit history – or as simple as lack of bus fare. That’s why we provide clients legal and support services they may need to get and keep a job. We have developed an extensive vendor network to provide these goods and services, and monitor their responsiveness to our clients.
What are Supportive Services?
During job training or in the first 30 days of employment, we may provide support that includes:
- Tools
- Uniforms
- Child care and transportation assistance
- Professional license fees
- Background checks
- Pre-employment physicals and drug screens
Our goal is that no eligible person misses an opportunity for employment because they can’t afford what’s needed to start a job.
With United Way support, we are able to offer supportive services to anyone living in the Greater Cleveland area and employed for less than 30 days in a full-time permanent position, with an income not exceeding 200% of the current federal poverty guidelines. We also provide on-going supportive services to participants enrolled in Towards Employment’s job readiness programs to enhance job retention for at least 6 months after starting a new job.
What are the Legal Services?
Eviction, credit card debt, unpaid child support, unpaid traffic fines that lead to warrants and past convictions… These are just some of the legal barriers that often face the working poor or those seeking to work. To get a job or keep a job, legal issues like these must be resolved.
We focus on legal issues low-income, disadvantaged adults commonly face. Our role begins as “troubleshooters” identifying legal barriers to employment during initial background checks for clients. For participants enrolled in Towards Employment’s training programs, we provide free legal counsel and representation for any issue that is a barrier to starting or keeping job. On a contract basis, we provide legal services to other groups.
If you have an employee who is a graduate of Towards Employment Job Readiness programs, we can help them with legal issues that may be impacting their ability to do their job. We help by intervening and supporting them in a timely manner so that your employee can refocus on being an outstanding employee.
