WorkAdvance is a collaboration of Northeast Ohio workforce organizations and employers working together to prepare low-income or unemployed individuals for careers in manufacturing and healthcare. Core services will be delivered in Cuyahoga and Mahoning counties though employer engagement activities will reach into surrounding counties. WorkAdvance impact will be evaluated using a random assignment research design in which half of eligible applicants will be selected to receive program services and half will serve as a control group who will be referred to services otherwise available in the community.
What services does WorkAdvance offer?
WorkAdvance is designed to be responsive to the needs of manufacturing and healthcare employers and individualized to each participant. The menu of available services includes:
- Assessment and identification of employment related barriers and the resources and referrals to address them
- Industry specific skills training, including certifications, based upon what employers are really asking for
- Job-readiness and job-search skill development workshops contextualized to each industry
- Direct job leads, interviews, and placement with employers looking to hire
- Ongoing career coaching and retention support to promote advancement
- Supportive services and resources to deal with any employment related issues
Who does WorkAdvance serve?
In Northeast Ohio, WorkAdvance will serve under- and unemployed individuals looking to pursue a career in manufacturing or healthcare. Participants must:
- Pass a drug screen
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be able to legally work in the U.S.
- Be proficient in basic math and reading
- Have family income of under 200% of poverty
- Meet healthcare industry standards for criminal history (healthcare only)
Who are the WorkAdvance Partners?
WorkAdvance is led by Towards Employment with Mahoning County operations led by Compass Family and Community Services. Project partners include: Center for Families and Children, Employment Connection, MAGNET, Mahoning Columbiana Training Association (MCTA), NEOHealthForce, Northeast Ohio Health Science Innovation Collaboration (NOHSIC), The Business Resource Network, The Center for Health Affairs, The Literacy Cooperative of Greater Cleveland, and WIRE-Net.
Who is funding WorkAdvance?
WorkAdvance is made possible by the federal Social Innovation Fund, a public-private partnership designed to expand promising programs. The Social Innovation Fund grant was made to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City and the NYC Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO). Towards Employment is the recipient of a sub-grant from the Mayor’s Fund and CEO. Additional funding for WorkAdvance is provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies and Open Society Foundations, and significant regional support is provided by Northeast Ohio’s Fund for Our Economic Future.
